As a team of journalists, we understand the importance of nonprofit news in a healthy democratic process. That’s why it’s our mission to help our News Partners grow their organic audience so they can better sustain their nonprofit growth models.
SEO Services for Nonprofit Newsrooms
We provide SEO services at a reduced price to nonprofit news outlets to aid in their audience growth and development. Since organic traffic is our sole organizational purpose and focus, we aim to help our news partners optimize their sites and increase organic traffic over the course of 6 months.
Specifically, our team will focus on optimizing nonprofit news sites to perform organically in "near me" news searches, as well as other targeted keywords. We work “behind the scenes,” so to speak, to help news outlets rank in search results so they can focus more on producing diverse, inclusive community news coverage and not on Google rankings. Our process guides our News Partners through an SEO growth process over the course of 3-6 months.
We're passionate about news.
That's why we offer our SEO services at a reduced rate for nonprofit newsrooms.

Why news?
Our entire team comes from a journalism background. We believe strongly that in order to do this work well for nonprofit news sites, we all must understand the importance of the fourth estate in a functioning democracy, as well as understand what it’s like to work in the trenches of day-to-day news coverage. As former reporters and journalism educators, we understand this deeply.
At Simple SEO, our team members are journalists first and trained SEO experts second.
We believe that’s exactly what’s needed to do this work. We believe “we can train journalists to be SEO experts, but we can’t train SEO experts to be journalists.” The goal of everyone on our team is to make the jobs of our News Partners easier.
We’ll worry about SEO, so you can worry about the news and focus solely on the communities you cover.
Our Mission
We’ve heard a lot about the “changing models of journalism,” especially the role nonprofit news plays in that change. As part of that change, we think it’s important for journalists to consider not only how their funding and journalistic processes have changed but also how audience needs have changed. To that effect, it’s important for journalists to consider user intent when thinking about how their audiences consume news.
Traditional news outlets use the “direct effects” model of communication, or they assume if they produce good, quality journalism for their site, readers will find it and consume it. They will sign up for their newsletter, follow their social media channels, and check the site regularly to get their news. It’s what every journalist wants, right? However, this traditional model relies on the direct dissemination of news to audiences and fails to consider one important factor – audience motivation.
Many people within a targeted audience population are not motivated to continuously follow the news as this direct dissemination model hopes they do. Rather, they are motivated by two things – Interest and Need. So, how do we find our audience if they aren’t coming to us? We need to hone in on Interest and Need. To reach disinterested audiences, use social media – post often, boost to targeted audiences, hold social events, etc. To reach those who NEED our news...
We must focus on organic search. Or, we need to target our news to what people are searching for in our news ecosystem.
At News Near You, we can help you grow your organic audience by focusing on user intent and implementing SEO strategies to help you meet the information needs of your readers.
